Article on co-op tech explores how near real-time data is transforming co-op safety, reliability and response

Copper Labs and our customer Holy Cross Energy was featured in the March edition of the Rural Electric Magazine, the monthly publication for National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) members.
The article looks at how access to near real-time data supports co-ops in the office and in the field.
Our pilot project with Holy Cross Energy (HCE) in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, is an example of how co-ops can use near real-time data collection from existing advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to drive members’ participation in demand-response programs.
Chris Bilby, HCE research and programs engineer, explains that the cooperative is also working to integrate the near real-time data from our pilot for additional purposes:
- Load disaggregation: to get a better picture of distributed energy resources on HCE’s system;
- Voltage measurement: to supply additional data to a situational awareness platform under development; and
- To provide other data to member service representatives for high-bill calls.
The overarching goal, according to Bilby, is to increase data transparency across co-op teams, improving operations and enabling employees to anticipate potential problems.
